life is but a walking shadow,
a poor player who struts and frets his hour upon the stage
and then is heard no more. it is a tale told by and idiot
full of sound and fury, signifying nothing

William Shakespeares Macbeth, act 5 scene 3 if my memory is correct

Speaking of Shakespeare...my favorite quote is this (a bit long..sorry):

If we shadows have offended, Think but this, and all is mended: That you have but slumbered here, While these visions did appear; And this weak and idle theme, No more yielding but a dream, Gentles, do not reprehend. If you pardon, we will mend. And, as I am an honest Puck, If we have unearned luck Now to 'scape the serpent's tongue, We will make amends ere long; Else the Puck a liar call: So, good night unto you all. Give me your hands, if we be friends, And Robin shall restore amends.

another semi-long shakespeare thing...same play (A Midsummer Night's Dream)

Hermia: Puppet? why so? ay, that way goes the game. Now I percieve that she hath made compare Between our statures; she hath urged her height; And with her personage, her tall personage, Her height, forsooth, she hath prevail'd with him. And you are grown so high in his esteem, Because I am so dwarfish and so low? How low am I, thou painted maypole? speak; How low am I? I am not yet so low But that my nails can reach unto thine eyes!

I think Oscar Wilde's "I have nothing to declare but my genius" kinda does it for me...

"Great wits and madness are near aligned, and thin partitions do there bounds divide."

From Othello.

Always really liked that one.

My favourite bitter and cynical one:

No-one is a virgin, life screws us all.

Be more concerned about your character than your reputation, because your character is what you really are, a reputation is just what others think of you.

Nothing is either good or bad, but thinking makes it so. -Hamlet

We have tested and tasted too much lover, through a chink too wide, there comes no wonder. - Patrick Kavanagh, "Advent"

There's more, but I'm too lazy to find them.

I really like this one too, but I'm confused. Shouldn't it be:
"Great wits are sure to madness near allied, And thin partitions do their bounds divide."
And far from me the idea to discredit my dear Lord Raath (or Shakespeare, incidentally) I believe this quote is attributed to John Dryden in Absalom and Achitophel, 1681.
I'll read Othello again, I might be wrong...

Havn't read Othello for years, but I distinctly remeber that quote from that period. Perhaps I'm just confusing stuff up, it does happen alot...

Doctor Lecter just reminded me of one of my favorites: " I am giving serious thoughts...to eating your wife."

Class quote, and scarily enough, probably very true...
