Default West Cork Today axed by UTV?

It seems UTV / C103 are about to axe the West Cork Today programme hosted by David Young. If this is true then the region of West Cork is about to lose a valuable resource.

This could end up being a short-sighted move by UTV. If their plans to consolidate the North Cork and West Cork local news programmes into one entity end up with neither of these regions feeling properly served, then audience figures and associated advertising revenues could start to take a hit.

Apart from that, the programme itself was always pretty edgy, entertaining, and definitely kept West Cork informed on a day to day basis of what was going on.

Dark clouds all round!

I'm sure there must be grants to keep something like this alive. With all the equipment being their already, the biggest cost would be the licensing, right ?

Default Common courtesy...

Tuned in this morning and its now 10:47 - UTV/C103 have changed their schedule but hav'nt made any effort to inform their listeners - just switched West Cork over to what is in effect North Cork Today.

To add to the cynicism they made sure they had a West Cork issue at the head of the programme, presumably thinking that anyone listening would'nt notice the difference?

No disrespect to Melinda Messinger, she's only doing here job, but she must be feeling that 'things ar'nt right' - a difficult position to be in?

What's really annoying is that a presenter who has served the local community for five years has simply been pushed to the side without any opportunity to thank his listeners, and in return they hav'nt been given a chance to express their appreciation.

One wonders if its worth listening to a station that on one hand is supposed to provide a service to the region, yet on the other hand does'nt have the common courtesy to acknowledge either its own employees or its audience!

Interesting that The New C103 wants the news but fails to deliver their own 'news'.

David Young is a huge loss to the listeners of West Cork, please UTV come to your senses and reinstate this talented broadcaster.

First an apology to Patricia whose name i got totally wrong. I hope she forgives my honest mistake!

Moving on maybe C103 will acknowledge their mistake as well - not a case of swallowing pride but just being 'man' enough to know when you've done the wrong thing.

In any case it looks like there is going to be a push to help the station see that contrary to the C103 management statement "what we have done is nothing out of the ordinary" (see http://www.corkman.ie/news/changes-a...n-1710379.html), that ordinary people don't think this is ordinary at all.

Protest to be held this coming Monday in Cork:

(Pass the word if you get this)

And another angle taken here:

Power to the people!
