so im going about it. my mum is going away this weekend and i have a few plans for her garden and kitchen actually.

to be honest theres a little self sufficient hermit lurking somewhere in me. thanks to shovel monkey sham i get a free digger so i have been very methodical and there are spreadsheets and everything. been doing loads of research today and hopefully if soil is right i should have the first varieties of lettuce and carrots down by next monday at latest and potatoes to follow. oooh i cant wait. im not exactly green fingered but at least there is a gain at the end of this. cant wait!

anybody else fancy a bit of the simple life? ill be so impressed if i actually yield anything in three months time.

The most I can manage is to look after my plants. I inherited some when a friend went to the states, and they are more than enough work (i.e. water twice a week). Two of them are chilli plants, so I am really interested to see how they turn out.

I'd love one, but I live in a first floor apartment so it's not possible. I really like the idea of eating my own produce!

you could have a window box/herb garden thingy. i think ruthie had something like that once

first update, proposed part of garden doesnt seem to have right soil but does have good climate and shade/water quota so im going to get some boxes about 4 x 3 foot or similar and plant in them for time being and if soil improves with a bit of ploughing and organic materials etc then i might replant when time comes to thin out.

i have three types of lettuce, one type carrot, a curly leaf parsley and i think beetroot.

so the cos lettuce is planted and im putting down other varieties and parsley tonight. its really educational and i wont mind missing the gym if im physically doing something outside that take a bit of effort.

Don't forget to take pics of your progress !

My chilli has had another baby. I wonder do they need to be pollinated to have babies, if that is the case I might need to leave them outside for a few days when the weather gets better.

google is your friend pablo!
but how has it been having babies if it isnt the way it should be already? dont fix what isnt broke i guess.

ah now you have given it a whole new dimension! id love to know where my second memory card is tho.

as it is i have four/five lettuce in a pot the circumference of a large spread hand, a really big spider lets say. thing is i dont really like lettuce but my mom is constantly buying the "bags" of salad and doesnt get what i mean when i say you know its chemicals and shite that keep it so crispy for weeks! ends up going to the hamster monstor!

on wiki I think I found the type of plant it is
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Thai_peppers.jpg but as for pollination I think I will have to look further

funny P, I noticed today that the basil plant has a flower on it...didn't know they should have flowers...

I've been growing some flowers from seeds in the window. They get big so fast!!

ah so now that i have my bed done, after a near miss with a hammer and gracious thanks to mr sham. i have two varieties of lettuce, spring onion, strawberry, pepper, parsley, sunflowers and a new bed will be made for spuds and carrots that will be about two foot deep. no pics yet cause it will just look like a box of dirt on gravel. oh and i got a lovely watering can too.

ah so the outdoor life. spent an hour yesterday picking stones out that were made visible by watering. the lettuce in bed i put down at weekend is already up thanks to savage weather. the strawberry plant i bought and set had a runner off it and took hold in soil all by itself so i ended up with 2 for price of one. i had just watched jamie oliver and he was saying what to look for in strawberry plants.

the bell pepper is still, a nice green plant. no sign of parsley or spring onion yet but the sunfloweres are growing about a centimetre each day! savage stuff!

Sounds Good DHBH.

My Thai Basil plant has had a great recovery after I picked some of the leaves. It's just one of those Basil plants that you get in the supermarket, but this time it actually survived longer than a week, in fact it's about 1 month old now, and it's started to flower.

sunflowers seem to be blighted, too wet and not enough sun but hopefully they will pull through and i might get a flower.

potted lettuce is ripe for picking,

bed lettuce is awfully stunted, reckon the beds are too shallow.

spring onion is up and looks like grass

parsley up

bell pepper seems to have two finely routed stalks but would disturb roots if it itried to see was there two plants

strawberry doing very well

and im buying slug pellets at weekend

hehe so witty pablo.

the teeny tiny little pepper plant i got at start of summer and left outside has three or four peppers. one of them as big as tomato now so ill chop him off before it gets cold, and they were never indoors in the wonderful summer we had.

lettuce is so easy to grow. i dont know why people go to shops, even a window box would save you lots!

I'm pants when it comes to this kinda thing, but I will say this - at our last flat, we had a rosemary bush growing outside the kitchen door.

Rosemary goes in EVERYTHING, and was great for a bit of "any herbs in the cupboard?" "Nah, grab a branch off the bush outside". Mmmmmm, rosemary. I miss that bush :(
