So, will you be making pancakes today? I had some for brunch, with batter left over for later!

What's your favourite filling/topping? Mine has to be lemon and sugar, but maple syrup is fantastic too.

And Pancake tuesday can only mean one thing: Lent starts tomorrow. Are you giving anything up? I'm going to give up chocolate, sweets, crisps, etc. I'll be in a foul mood until next week and the withdrawal symptoms ease off!

We just decided at lunch that we're all giving up sweets, crisps and chocolate. Can't wait to see how long we last!

I'm giving up chocolate. I'll try all sweet things but if I don't eat chocolate I'll be very proud of myself. I've already stocked up on fruit and nuts etc...

Myself and my body are giving up coffee, :coffee: for 40 days and 40 nights (well I intend to have a coffee full day for my birthday). I've never really given up anything properly.

I used to always give up chocolate but I don't really like it anyway so that was easy! And sweets usually. I think it's really better to take up something - start going to the gym or something

Aye, me too, but they're bloody expensive!

I'm going to California for the summer, so I'm using this as an oppertunity to shed those extra pounds...

I had a pancake with fresh cream and strawberries and peach here at work for lunch yummy I must say. Will probably have the sugar and lemon ones later on, too.

I don't think I'll be giving up anything as surprisingly I don't eat excess of anything really. i recently joined gym but havent gone as much as i would like yet, so i will continue trying to get there.
I have never really given up anything for lent, except that time I gave up salt and eggs as a child. Things I hated at the time. now I still don't use salt, I forget when I'm cooking that most people use it as seasoning and I love eggs now. nam nam.

Just went for the sugar and lemon myself... must be getting old!
I sifted the flour just as Delia says and they were the yummiest fluffiest pancakes ever (obviously)

Hmm lemon and sugar, it took us a while to get it right [due to the shoddy frying pan] but once we got going they were actually pretty good!

I gave up everything the Monday before Lent because it's easier for me that way. So it's been over a week since I've eaten chocolate, sweets, crisps, biscuits or cakes.

The cakes thing is just coincidental, though.

I got a sandwich yesterday and they put a load of crisps on the side of the plate. But I didn't eat any of them.

That's good will power Ciaran. I've had no chocolate what-so-ever.... so proud of myself!

Faith
09-03-2007, 13:59
Yup, I've had no chocolate, sweets, crisps or biscuits!

mairead
15-03-2007, 19:46
Still off the chocolate... it's not so difficult anymore.
Well.. anyone fall off the wagon?

Faith
15-03-2007, 23:43
Nope, I'm still firmly on it. Huzzah!

I haven't actually found it difficult at all. I've substituted it with smoothies, homemade muffins and flapjacks.

ciaran
16-03-2007, 10:53
I accidentally ate a crisp when someone opened a packet in the pub one night but apart from that I'm still on!

mairead
16-03-2007, 11:08
No Ciaran... that counts. It's hell for you my dear boy!

ciaran
16-03-2007, 11:10
Do you know when someone gets a packet and tears it open and leaves it out on the table, I had eaten one before I even realised!!

Must go to confession I suppose and cleanse myself of my sins

mairead
16-03-2007, 11:20
I picked up a sample of chocolate in a fancy shop in cambridge. It was 10cm from my mouth when I realise what I was doing and threw it away... I got a strange look from the shop assistant.
yes Ciaran A good confession will make it all better.

My toughest challenge came today, when I was waiting for my food in the chinese. There was a huge plate of free Celebrations... Resisting them was so hard!

pablo

orna
19-03-2007, 22:37
i ate a whole packet of crisps in front of ciaran on saturday, very mean i know

mairead
20-03-2007, 10:52
Well done ORna, it will make him stronger. Well I was at a 1st birthday party and resisted chocolate cake, Chocolate brownies and chocolates in general. And after the patricks day parade there was hot chocolate on tap to warm us up but I just went with a cup of tea.

orna
21-03-2007, 00:07
well done Mairead!!!

i sat and drank a glass of wine in front of my mom tonight (which she is off for lent) and i will eat chocolate in front of you at the weekend Mairead

i'm just here to test you all......

mairead
21-03-2007, 10:29
fantastic Orna. I'm not gone off pnching people in the nose for lent though... just to warn you!
I've decided that my easter treat is going to be one of those golden Lindt Bunnies....mmmmmm That ans watching easter Parade on the telly.

ciaran
21-03-2007, 11:50
I'm getting 3 packets of Pringles, 2 of those Walkers ones [the sweet chilli] and a big bag of salt and vinegar taytos and gorging myself on them

pablo
23-03-2007, 09:35
Easter Parade ? ? You really are into your marches mariead.

Well there is two weeks left until I can get my paws on some coffee. 2 weeks. GAH ! I do know that I will not be doing the "no coffee" thing again, I know I can do it so I don't need to repeat it.

Faith
23-03-2007, 12:48
Pah! That's a poor excuse Pablo :P.

I hope to stay off as much as I can from now on. I haven't lost any weight, like I hoped I would (too much substituting with homemade muffins and flapjacks!), but I feel immeasurably more healthy than I did before Lent. I'm sleeping better, I'm waking up before my alarm clock, I'm in a better mood overall...

Blumenblatt
23-03-2007, 13:19
...that could also have to do with the fact that it is lighter in the morning now than it was at the start of lent...;)

Faith
23-03-2007, 18:19
...I'm in Edinburgh. Scotland. Even in the middle of summer, it's never light for long here.

25-03-2007, 20:00
No Ciaran... that counts. It's hell for you my dear boy!

Jesus saves...(people from their own weaknesses).

pablo
25-03-2007, 21:19
2 weeks & counting !

Niamh what is your weakness ?

mairead
25-03-2007, 21:25
Forgive me feckerthat-ers, I have sinned, I ate a slice of toblerone.
I completely forgot my chocolate fast until Niamh pointed it out... It was only one slice though and I miss chocolate even more now so it's actually more of a sacrifice again!

neenee
25-03-2007, 23:21
And in fairness she did puke it up within twenty minutes. We reckon Jesus got angry and gave her a pain in her tummy.

Ive stayed off alcohol, but i stated lent 3 days late as my bday was two days after lent so started on the sunday and its going all good:):)

mairead
29-03-2007, 17:05
Foiled again.... I got a bag of mixed fruit and nuts in Lidl "Sirius Nussige Frucht Michung". So I had a chomp off them there and one nut tasted particularly like a white malteeser. Not I notice there small writing with "Mit Schoko Crispies". So now I'm going to have to pick around the schoko goodness. Feckit chocolate is so damn nice.

neenee
29-03-2007, 17:16
Tut tut tut. That sounds like someone deliberately falling off the wagon to me Mairead.

orna
29-03-2007, 19:37
i'm disappointed in you Mairead, Jesus wont be happy either, there's only a week and a bit to go, surely you can make it.

pablo
29-03-2007, 20:22
mairead you are going to HELL ! :nope:

Faith
29-03-2007, 21:53
I had cheesecake earlier, thus breaking the "biscuit" bit. I forgot that there was even biscuit in it. I was halfway through when I realised! Oh well. Chocolate is the main one.

mairead
30-03-2007, 09:44
I'm currently eating around the white malteesers things so it's like extra pennance. It was twice out of the entire lent so maybe I'll escape hell afterall.

Well I've just about survived, no coffee has passed my lips, except for St. Patricks day & in ice cream (once) and in my birthday cake (once). So I feel pretty detoxed ! Bring on Sunday morning when I will have at least 4 coffees :java: I kid you not !

pablo
10-04-2007, 12:15
I was shaking a little on Sunday morning. I had almost forgotten that I could drink coffee, but when it dawned on me I got a little flutter in my heart. Anyway it's great being back on coffee :D And I don't think I will repeat it next year. It was a good challenge none the less. Hmmm coffee & chocolate ! :java:

Faith
10-04-2007, 18:33
Back on the chocolate, a little disappointed with myself that I didn't keep it up indefinitely. I might go off it again in a week.

ciaran
11-04-2007, 10:48
Yeah I had a bag of crisps yesterday and half way through realised I didn't really want them... mind you I did have half a big bag of Walkers sensations just after midnight on Saturday! [i.e. Sunday morning]
