Just reading this : http://breakingnews.ie/ireland/?jp=CWIDIDKFKFEY and wrote this (http://www.eirjobs.com/news/2006/12/06/budget-2007-winners-loosers/trackback/) so I am wondering if any/many people in Ireland are actually interested in the Budget, or is it along the levels of apathy with the voting.

Is it something people think is important to them. Or do you just see it as some that can't be stopped and will happened either way.

I actually thnk the budget is very important. And being an election year they could pull a stunt and give the breaks to the vocal majority (ordinary tax payers) instead of the voiceless who need it most (Old people, Kids, sick etc...) Tax payers have enough money. Too much in fact, look at the price of houses, and then they have two flash cars sitting in the drive. Cutting tax will just lead to inflation cos we like to spend spend spend.

well im a tax payer and have been pretty much for last 3 years in fact. my tax isnt extortionate but then again im comparing it to other tax payers (a lot who a self employed) and the majority are irish born and bred. we pay these rates coz we think it is right. isnt it china or something who has a flat rate of 13%? dont see anything wrong with their economy.

i dont think it is necessairly the house buyers that bring up the prices, now i know it is the house buyers that bid against eachother and therefore the price goes up. the way i see it if i see a house for sale for under €250,000 all i expect to see is a shack.

a lot of us werent affected by the celtic tiger as a lot would have been studying etc, but we have grown into the work force with celtic tiger pricing and attitudes. government put a name to something to get us excited and spend money in the mid nineties, when the rest of the developed world didnt feel the need to call a "working economy" after an illusive animal.

all the celtic tiger is doing now is keeping O'Leary company.

ill be frank in how the budget will affect me, Cigarettes, Cider, Petrol and to a far less extent the extra 16 cent or so of my own money that i might get in a tax break!

Well it's a fact that the Irish economy grew by some absolutely amazing amount in the nineties, but it was coming from a very low base. Regarding the budget, the price of beer will be the big effect for me! Actually some of this promised money that the government is claiming to be spending on research [but which doesn't seem to be appearing] would be nice as well. Stamp Duty and all that, well it affects house buyers, apart from that, increasing taxes on investors will just push up rental prices [just like everyone else I'm really only interested in how it will affect me!]

Ciarán : the vintners are of course never happy , as too are the farmers.

I think the Irish Cancer Society wanted cigs to be increased by €2. Maybe next year...

dont like the idea of a pack of cigs going up 2 euro.

its just making it a think for the people with money.

its wont effect young people from starting. and by young people i mean early teenagers.

if i can remember things like a Pack of cigs was a group thing. a few people chiped in to buy a pack.

packs of 10 are being phased out as well.

they have funny sized packs here in Germany, they tend to prefer the even money rather than the even number of cigs. So it's possible to get a 17 cig pack !

You can get 16 packs here. Apparently they worked out that that's the average number of cigarette smoked a day.
