Burger and chips will soon be off the menu at its theme parks worldwide. Film and cartoon characters will no longer be used to promote salty snacks and sugary drinks.

...

Out will go products such as The Incredibles Pop Tarts and Winnie The Pooh biscuits. In could be Nemo mineral water and porridge courtesy of Goldilocks. Disneyland, Disney World in Florida and Disneyland Paris will serve up vegetables and fruit juice.

The firm is also ending its 10-year $1 billion deal with McDonald's to advertise on its happy meals.

I'm all for cutting ties to McDonald's and being more responsible about what their characters promote on TV, but cutting out junk food at a theme park seems pretty stupid. After walking around a park all day on holiday a treat isn't going to hurt anybody, is it ? Maybe Disney are trying a new image makeover to make the parks seem more appealing ?

Thoughts?

Actually, I agree with a move like this. It's all in the advertising though. Kids will pig out on "treats" til they're the size of a house (wait, I tell a lie; adults will do it too) because their attitude to food is that a treat is tasty and everything else is horrible. Youl have to make healthy food appealling for people, hence the need for good advertising/marketing so that people develope a healthier relationship with food and stop viewing unhealthy foods as treats. It needs to be done overall though, not just in theme parks. Kudos to Disney though :)

but its disney land!!! you need chips an burgers!!! its part of the disneyland experience, getting a burger in a peter pan themed restaurant is brilliant. it'll never work, like the super size in mcdonalds, it'll be back in a year after they get rid of it.

Maybe it's a marketing thing, companies having a social conscience and all that. (will update this tomorrow)

If it works, I say great! I just don't have a whole lot of confidence in the ability of this to actually work. Burgers and chips and the such are just part of theme parks...I do like the idea of them not helping promote the crap via McDonalds or other advertisement....
