View Full Version : Irish Driving Test : any tips/hints ?
so i am doing mine tomorrow, i was going to keep it quiet but why bother, people might have some helpfull hints! kidney killer passed hers there a few weeks ago and so did dangermouse so i am hoping for a trio of good luck, that said i am doing mine in tipp. cant think of anything that would phase me, had my first lesson at weekend and it was so refreshing to hear somebody tell me i was doing something perfect. i recommend the irish school of motoring. they give u load of blurb and basically do the test with you. so i have a provincial "pass", just have to wait till 1.30 tomorrow!
Don't have any tips, but good luck!
The best thing is to remain calm, and remember to move on if you do a mistake and if you don't understand the instructor ask them to repeat the instruction.
G'Luck !
Keeping calm is the biggest thing I think, if you look like you're concentrating hard on everything you do it looks bad. Mind you I'd take advice from people who know what they're talking about over anything you read here!
anyone wanna bet on me? ill give odds of 6/1 to pass, 11/1 to hit some farmer dan making his way from the poitigear to the bank! eh 7/4 that i will loose wheel due to the crator like road surfaces. what else 20/1 to bump the kerb (if i fail it wont be on the reversing bit, good old terrace life) and sure we throw in for good measure that i wont be able to do the test at all due to gammy headlamp casing 8/1, dodgy headlight bulb 3/2 and lastly because the car wont start coming in at 5/4.
take your bets!
Maybe you don't want to see this, but here are the Pass Rates (http://www.drivingtest.ie/drivingtest/HTMLContent/passrates.html) broken down per driving centre.
43.4 for where i am doing it. alomost the lowest. ah well! wont ye be so proud of yere little fecker if i pass it! haha!
scrap one of the lowest, it is the lowest by a good .9% or so
One advice is make sure you know your road signs and other oral question part like the back of your hand, as if you don't get them right, it will give a bad impression from the get go.
yup i know all my hand signals and road signs and and mechanical checks. i learnt to drive over the phone like! to be honest i dont know if i will pass, i think ill be kinda shocked if i do and obviously thrilled if i do. since ive started driving i have done maybe 15-20,000 miles in a year. the only thing is 99.99% of those miles were alone. but i was grand with the instructor beside me just hope ill feel same with mr instructor no fun beside me

Poop! Ah well, it happens a lot the first time round. You'll probably fly through it the next time because you'll be more relaxed. Did you find it hard overall?
idnt find it hard at all. the low pass rate is de to the man i had. not been "im perfect" i did fuck up but not to merit the fail i got! ballsack!
Sorry to hear . I failed a few times myself too . Apply again !
How many errors did you get ?
i got 12 where i was only allowed 8. i hold my hand up and say i did feck up and had counted at least 5 things that i knew i had been docked for but i didnt deserve to fail! id like to thank all 4 courteous drivers in tipperary town, for flashing me onwards, stopping mid roundabout and stopping in their tracks for me! you have added another €38 to the department of transport from my pocket

'tis a fair few that fail the first time anyhow. I did! (there hasn't yet been a 2nd time, think I'm gonna take mine here in the UK anyhows)
Start saving noi! Driving lessons are bloody expensive in Oxford.
Don't let Crispin teach you.

so in relation to the irish driving test...
it's a shambles. it doesn't take into account the state of the road network in ireland and there's no transparancy to the system. i'd to do the hibernian ignition there a few years back and i must say it was one of the most constructive tests i've ever done. you're pulled up and what your faults are in the real world rather than some mythical magical driving test world. things like touching the kerb when reversing round a corner or doing a 3 point turn fail you in the test yet you're activly told to swing into a driveway to turn when doing the ignition, it's what any sane person would do if it was ther and they needed to turn. the amount of things i did in that course that would have failed me my driving test yet gained me marks in that was unbelievable. things like skipping from 2nd to 4th or vice versa is bold in the driving test and do it too often and it's a failing point yet it actually means less wear on a clutch as only one gear change and one time taking your hand off the wheel.
the test system need to be radically overhauled to bring it in line with the rest of europe and the real world and prevent people failing on stupid things like you're still in your lane and not doing anything wrong but you're a bit too far from the kerb!!! why is the lane that fucking wide if you're not supped to use it????
now just to interject i didnt do that thing above there, my reverse around corner was exhibition worthy. just to clarify

my apologies. didn't mean to suggest otherwise. twas just first thing i thought of from my own test
I hopped the corner in the one that I passed too ;)
One thing about the test that really annoys me is the waiting time :grr:
I'm tempted to do mine over here, but I have to look into whether or not I need to resit the theory test and get a new provisional and everything.
is your provisional out of date? you have 2 years from date of issue to sit a test but you will usually get a second one anyhow. letting it run out can be a bit of a bitch tho so i hear
By over here, I mean Edinburgh. I'm on my second provisional, but it's an Irish one.
my brother in swansea was able to get an british one really quickly but it seems on your first british one it really is a no no to drive by yourself and the majority seem to follow it, unlike here where we arrive at test centre unaccompanied by fully licensed driver.
that said your 2nd irish one allows you to drive alone. i think u are given the eqivalent of what you have if you get me! or i dont know! time for one them eurpean all over licenses me thinks. jen might know
Cullen promises eight-week waiting time for driving tests
17/11/2006 - 19:07:49
Waiting lists for driving tests will drop to eight weeks in a year’s time, it was claimed today.
Detailing spending plans for the next 12 months, Minister for Transport Martin Cullen said there would be a 58% increase in finance for public transport.
And the Road Safety Authority is to get €10m to clear the backlog of learner drivers.
The waiting list for a test has already fallen from well over a year to 28 weeks, but Mr Cullen said he wanted it reduced further.http://breakingnews.ie/ireland/?jp=CWIDOJOJOJAU
I know is a supply and demand issue, and the back log. But once they reduce the waiting time by more than 7 months, why don't they go the whole way and reduce it further by one more month ??
