That would be cool, we can all go up the day before, get drunk with belly, queue from the early morning and then go to concert

that sounds like a really good plan Darkstar, a feckthat out of cork meeting, the first of its kind.
anyone know bruxells, its THE metal pub in dublin. james hetfield and the boys have been 2 or 3 time when they visited dublin a few years back. its where i always go before metallica gigs. could meet up there. its where i'll be in the hopeless hope that james will come in for a coke and maybe bring kirk with him.

days? I'm down to mere hours by now!!!!!!!!

I reckon we should go to Achill island one day and go surfing. I went surfing there in fourth year and nearly got killed, i wiped out (note use of lingo) and got knocked unconsious by the board, I nearly drowned!

but the BBQ was cool afterwards. I just love beach BBQs, my aunt who lives in Oz, every year they have a BBQ on the beach for Xmas dinner!!!

[QUOTE=metallica website]METALLICA, DONINGTON, THE FULL SCOOP! 6/6/2004

"You're always around for the special ones!" laughs James Hetfield as I stand watching the band prepare for their Donington dambuster of a set behind the stage curtain moments before Battery.
For the last few hours James, Kirk and Rob had been busily jamming with Joey Jordison from Slipknot and Dave Lombardo from Slayer. Word filtered through that Lars suffered a medical emergency and frankly, I don't like to ask too many questions when the boys are preparing to deliver in unusual circumstances. The CD players were out, the guys were ripping through jams and the clock was ticking. Atlanta 2000 Sanitarium anybody? I mean, the comparisons are too crazy, too symmetrically perfect...so did we really, ever doubt that this Metallica show would be anything less than plain goddam cool? No. Why? Because when their backs are against the wall, they ALWAYS ALWAYS deliver.
In a sense, the thought of watching Dave Lombardo hammering Battery was something many have dreamt might happen in some crazy "rock swap" game, and as for Jordison, the man behind the mask, his command of the Metallicatalogue was rumored (and proven) to be second to none.
Before the guys went onstage their energy was high high high, and with the show having been delayed without announcement, James stepped out and filled in the crowd on what had been going on, informing them of the Lars situation and that the guys had some friends stepping up to fill in. Thus it was that Lombardo bashed out a brutal Battery, a crushing statement that this show was not going to do anything less than deliver. The uniqueness got even greater after Lombardo drilled out Horsemen, when Jordison appeared clad in his Slip-mask to deliver For Whom The Bell Tolls (adding his own unique twist and flavor) before tearing through Creeping Death and Seek and Destroy.
Then came my favorite moment... Flemming Larsen, Lars' tech for so many years, delivering a flawless Fade To Black, spotless, calm and with a family feeling to huge to capture...or was it watching James ask suddenly who was gonna do Nothing Else Matters behind the stage, moments before it went down, and seeing Joey, mask shining evil in the night-light, take a deep breath and step up to nail the waltzy percussion...or James beaming a grin back at Joey and chuckling "when do we get some masks?" Or was it just watching the guys step up themselves, continually delivering song after song and not losing a beat...or was it Rob making sure that all occupants of the stool were comfortable and on the count?
Look, I could go on and on (I know I know, hard to believe -!!), but time is running out here, the clean-up crew are creeping in and I'm losing time.
Listen.
This was not a fill-in.
These were not substitutes.
That was UNIQUE SHOW.
An EVENT.
And everyone stepped up.
Really.
This was family metal, the true way it should be, the proper Donington spirit, in many ways so much more than anyone could've expected.
There will be more news as it comes through, and ignore the rumors that will inevitably spring up until you read it here.Too many people out there wanna grab "scoops" and end up missing both the point and the facts altogether.
And right here, right now, the big story is that Metallica stepped up to support their missing brother (with the help of some friends) and that the night was yet another unique chapter of Metallihistory.
A final abiding memory?
Seeing the members of Slayer and Slipknot watching their respective drummers do the business and wearing big, fat, shit-eating grins.
A special night of metal?
Ohhhhh yes, I think so...

ya it was something else!! cant wait to get it off livemetallica. slayer were switched from the main stage to the snickers stage which pissed me off cuz i was right at the front of the main stage just left of the centre. they still put on a mental show even though they looked completely recked. metallicas show was cool as dave played savage, joeys contribution stood out a lot in "for whom the bell tolls" where the kinda gap where "constant chill deep inside....." bit is. it was amazing. the whole festival was amazing!! and i got tom arayas pick :)

my full review

The line-up was supposed to be as follows - Breed 77, Turbenegro, ill Nino, Soulfly, Machine Head, Slayer, Slipknot, Korn, Metallica but because of "traffic congestion" Turbenegro and ill Nino were switches around. Then after Soulfly a notice came up that due to "transport issues with slayer” they will be switched with Damageplan and put on the small stage. This was bollocks as I came from Ireland and queued at 6 in the morning to guarantee my place in the front and now I’d have to lose my place in the front (Donington holds 60,000 so there was a slim chance of getting to the front. 2 songs into Damageplan’s set I decided to leave because the pressure on me was starting to get too much for me so I decided to leave and get much needed food and take a piss. I returned to hear them play an extremely good version of "walk" and when they started to set machine heads gear up I went back to the front and got almost 5 heads away from the front but decided to pull back from the front because the pressure was too much for me. See Donington has only got the front crash barrier around the stage and nothing else so you have 60,000 people at your back.. I was still fairly close when Robb Flynn from machine head shouted "I wanna see the biggest circle pit in the history of Donington!!. Everybody clear the fuck back" so I turned around and there was a HUGE empty circle behind me and every started moshing so I thought why not and started moshing. At the end of Machine Head's set I left just as they were setting up slipknots kegs. I went to the Snickers sponsored small stage (it was actually a huge tent) just before Life of Agony came on and got to the front barrier and saw life of agony. They were actually really good. I was expecting them to be shit!! Slayer fans were filtering in during their set for the carnage that was to follow LOA’s set so before the end of LOA’s set everyone started chanting “SLAYER SLAYER” and Life of Agony's guitar player some of “Angel of Death” and the bassist played the start of “South of Heaven”. The singer then sang "Raining Blood” in a very high-pitched voice and the guitarist says no that’s wrong and growls it and said that they are fans too. Then they go we know you wanna see these guys so we're going to head off now so thank you very much!! Then another announcement came on that only half of slayers kit had arrived so they would be delayed by another half hour. We showed our anger by pelting bottles at the stage and at the crew who were setting up Taking Back Sundays gear. The stage was covered in bottles and in the end they gave up trying to put up the gear and packed it all away again. They cleared the bottles and wheeled in Dave’s kit on the drum rise and wheeled the Marshall amps on stage and set them and the bass amps up. We could see under the stage so we saw slayer coming in the back. When “The Darkness of Christ” came on it was complete chaos!!!! Bodies went everywhere!! One person managed to get backstage and jumped off the stage into the crowd only he missed the crowd and his body got cracked off the crash barrier!! Toms pick got thrown on the ground at the opposite side of the crash barrier than me and a security guard picked it up and handed it to me. An amazing show!! We walked back to the main stage and went to the hills around the stage to watch Metallica. We passed the time by having a massive bottle fight with the people and the bottom of the hill. It passed the time well. After AC/DC’s “It’s a long way to the top if ya wana Rock & Roll” Metallica came on. By then it was 10 (they were scheduled for 8.15). They announced that Lars was in hospital and that they didn’t know what was wrong with him and that they have a little help wit some of their friends and they'll still play. During “The Ecstasy of Gold” classical tape intro I joked to my brother about Dave playing. Then the tape intro to “Battery” came on. When Hetfield played the electric start to the song Dave hopped out from the back and onto Lars drum kit. We weren’t sure if it was Dave but when it showed him drumming on-stage on the screens we went crazy. He played amazing except for he fucked up once during the middle of “Battery” because when the song is played live Metallica stop for a few seconds in the middle but Dave played on. He still did extremely well and Joey from slipknot played for “Whom the Bell Tolls” extremely well. Livemetallica.com will be selling the show. Id say it'll be the most downloaded show easily!!!! It was an amazing Festival. During Soulfly set I looked to the back of the stage and say Dave McClain (Machine Heads drummer) looking at me so I gave him the horns and he returned the favour!! It was amazing. Tom Araya laughed at me and I got a nod from Jeff Hammeman!!!!!!! I also managed to get a lot of water thrown at Turbenegro the queer fuckers!!!!!!!!!!!

wow what a show. and indeed thanks to mr. sham for gettin everyone into the pit, i was lucky enough to have gotten a pit pass off my brother but i always had sham as my backup if i didn't find one in time for metallica.

i could have done with out the whiskey in the jar, would have much prefered frayed end of sanity, which james played a tiny bit of and some of the crowd started chanting oh way oh, and was really cool. houlier than tho and where ever i may roam where fantastic, as was king nothing. great setlist i thought, would have like a few more master, ride and kill em all songs but i suppose they didn't have the time.

slipknot were great too, bit of a short set tho and kinda poor sound at times but still they rocked like i knew they would.

and the aiken security went from non existant last year to being classified as a small army this year. they were fantastic i thought. they totally enforced that rule on the back of the ticket "no crowd surfing or moshing" which i thought was impossible. they totally got rid of those mindless fools who don't even listen to the music and just want to run around hitting and bumping people leaving the rest of us have a great time with your average headbanging slight moshing while singing along antics.

how did he get ya in??
tis simple i'm master of the vip pass and i also know how to open pit passes. got well over a dozen people in with my pit pass. spent the slipknot set in the vip lounge. v. nice i must say. free drink and ice cream too. a big shout out to jasper for sorting me out with some vip passes and a voucher for free curry and chips (which i forgot i had until i got home:()

highlights of the day included

me and darkstar tellind very bad jokes

tormenting mad hairy john in the queue

the look on clionas face when i told her she'd need her pit pass back about a minute after deb had used it to get into the pit

obviously tallica but that goes without saying.

gotta agree with outlaw the pit was nice and civilised where i was. i only had to plant one person for acting the bollox.a smack in skull sorted that out for me. i could have done without the half 5 start but it was worth it in the end.

it was truly a savge gig. except i couldnt see lars ulrich at all except when he came to the front of the stage. i met the owner of www.metallicaworld.co.uk a really nice guy. i had traded bootlegs with one of his friends and i'd seen his tattoo on the site so i recognised him immediately. did anyone get any photos??

quote of the day by james hetfield "this crowd goes to 11!!!!" fuck ya we do and boy did we. highlight?? getting to hear whiskey in the jar live. thats all i wanted to hear and they played it at the right fucking time. man what an atmosphere!! it was a killer gig. they played just about every song that i wanted to hear plus the showman ship was fucking excellant. also a big thumbs up to slipknot. they have some stage presence. plus seeing them live was kick ass. especially when corey told the whole crowd to get down. man that was a killer moment. thought lost prophets were ok but they didnt deserve what they got. they seemed to take it in their stride anyway!!

will they be including the whole concert, support and all. i'm guessing no but i really want to hear slipknots show. it was such a fast blur on the day i can hardly remember it now. a bootleg dvd or video of the dublin show would be really great too. if anyone hears of any such bootleg let me know.

slayerdiabolus
30-06-2004, 20:19
no it'll just be metallica's set. i'm a bootleg trader so i'll let you know if i see anything from that show. i heard a rumour that they were recording the metallica show for a DVD but i doubt it. and i'd kinda be hard to sneak a camcorder past the security gaurds. if i see anything i'll get it and i'll let ye know!! outlaw you want me to do the 04 show for 3 cds?? PM me if you wana!

Sham, thou art a legend of the highest order.

I am still reeling from them playing No Leaf Clover, it's always been one of my favs, Fade To Black being my fav, I was fucking stunned when I heard the orchestral intro, I was like AGH!!!!

As for the fucker in the blue shirt - I bopped him gooooooood! He had it coming, the arsehole.

I may offer up thanks to Dave (Darkstar) and Colin (the freaks'freak) for holding me up when I blacked out. Lifesavers!!!

May I say only one thing more - blubberdodder (ten times fast!)

ah i see, well i got none of them this year. got one last year tho and if it wasn't caught directly from kirk hammetts throw i wouldn't have believed it was a metallica plec cause its fairly crap as far as plecs go, just has an m on one side and metallica on the other and the metallica writing is coming of slightly so i don't use it. still tho i love it and is one of my most prised possessions along with my jim root from slipknot pic which is way cool and is his own customised one which his name printed on it.

Lars came down onto the stand for the cameramen and put it in my hand and i grabbed it and he pulled it away and i stuck my hand out again and he kinda smacked it into my hand. it was savage. i fell back down onto the barrier and almost cried!! it was such a rush!

ye must have been very pround with Lyrics - going over, the CORK and kerry mountains! the gig has been dubbed "whiskey in dublin" by bootleg traders. if any of ye want a cover for the show its here http://groups.msn.com/METCOVERART/roamersmetallicacoverart.msnw?Page=91 its cool

i'm just after fishing out one of my bootlegs where they play only covers (24/Nov/98 Garage Days Live New York, Roseland Ballroom to be exact) and at the end of whiskey in the jar jamyz goes

"That there is an old Irish drinking song, i think all the irish songs are drinking songs"

Thats the only live version i have of it. does anyone have the 2FM broadcast of the show they played on sunday on cd?? what are they playing this sunday on "fm??

I could be wrong but seeing as they are both available for download for a little fee, doesn't that mean they're not bootlegs? It'd be like buying a live DVD and calling it a bootleg...

slayerdiabolus

It'd be like buying a live DVD and calling it a bootleg

not exactly. that is an official live dvd then. livemetallica.com offers shows you download. you cant go into a shop and buy the shows. they are official but the general term for music bootlegs is a recording of a bands concert. the little fee is explained on the site

www.livemetallica.com/faq.asp
No one's making a lot of money on this little wing-ding. There are a number of costs specific to each download, including publishing fees, bandwidth costs, credit card fees, venue origination fees and venue union fees. In addition to these show specific costs, there are general expenses such as hardware and software purchases/licenses and ongoing programming/design fees. In total, there are substantial costs associated with launching and maintaining this service, and its future viability depends on honest participation.

JennyPen
09-08-2004, 13:17
you prob know this site already but http://bootleg.freakin.nl/

actually the term bootleg means to make an illegal recording of a concert, not just a recording. if it's one that's available in some way officially, it's not a bootleg.

Obviously enough, the term came from the fact that fellas used to record concerts illegally by sticking a dictaphone in their boots et voila, le concert.

slayerdiabolus
09-08-2004, 19:36
ya you are probably right but to me bootlegs are concert recordings. hey thanks for the link. it might help if i had broadband..... actually bootleg means to make an illegal copy of anything. fake merchandise are bootlegs. if you video a movie in the cinema its called a bootleg movie. so i dont know where the term came from!

JennyPen
09-08-2004, 19:42
that is where the term came from! if you want me to download any of those concerts for you i DO have broadband, so I can post it to you if you like...
