christ where do i start. went to see it this evening and was blown away. i'm looking at it for 3 viewpoints a movie goer, a classicist and an archaeologist.
so then as a movie goer: the film moves along quite nicely with some good battles and some excellent one on one fights. eric bana performed out of his skin. in my opinion he carried the whole film, i can only dream of what it would have been like if he was cast as achilles. not saying brad pitt is bad but he's just outshone. some scenes were a bit heavy on cgi but it didn't really take from the film
as a classicist: i was dissapointed with some changes made to the overall story of the illiad. for example there's no mention of the fight over ajax' armour and he's killed in battle unlike the poem where he kills himself. there's also no sense of the length of time the war is fought over but these are all relativley minor complaints in the grand scheme of things
as an archaeologist: this is what made the film for me. the attention to detail is incredible. some of the goblets used were only in use in the late helladic period (beginning around 1400bc) which is the beginning of the rise of mycaene as a major power in dhe broze age. the detail on swords was also excellent. the right style of ribbing was used in the centre of the blades which strenghtened the blade. these aren't the kind of things everyone will notice but they made a good filme even better for me

i thought the film was cool. i thought when brad pitt had his pants on (well skirt) he played the part very well. but hats off to eric bana he stole the movie for me and gave some performance

not too convincing. they tried to make him legolas the elf with the archery and stuff. then again ask cliona and she might put it a different way
So translating from jealous man talk, he was brilliant! ;)
Orlando was a bitch from what i've heard, ive seen the first disk ive downloaded and they really made paris seem weak, as a fellow reader of the illiad i have to say some elements i have been disappointed with because they have been left out.
But overall it looks like a good hollywood war movie.
Notice the lack of the word "Epic"....im still unsure about that, nothing thus far has grabbed me to refer to it as the said type of movie...Still theres still half of it to watch later on tonight!

i may be being a bit hard on it over small things. comes from having scary greek professors ranting on and on about the small details of the illiad. the hector/achilles fight is excellent
i aint hit that part yet.
Looking forward to it.

no he looked nice and all but he was kinda a ponce. eric bana and brad pitt all the way though!! especially brad pitt naked a few times too which never takes from a movie :D . even if they weren't in it though it would still be a kick ass movie!!

No really.Paris is supposed to be very good with a bow and arrow.Since Orlando Bloom was used to bows and is a poncey pretty boy,he WAS Paris.
Eric Bana was the man.Very good performance as Hector.
Brad Pitt was an excellent Achilles.Broody,an amazing fighter, they choose well.
The cast as a whole were pretty good.
Overall, movie was good enough. They fucked around with some details (deaths, events etc.),but if you can look past this,it was probably the best version of 'The Iliad' we're going to see in a movie. For now anyway.

they quite nicely left the door open to make the aenied too. be sweet to see that on screen too. they end credits for troy does say it's "inspired by" the iliad so it's not meant to follow it exactly. it does contain all the elements needed for the myth it just doesn't follow homers version at all times

That would kick ass as well. How the fuck would they pull off Book 6 though? That would have to be seriously unhappy.
Seeing Aeneas vs. Turnus on the big screen would be cool.

What are ye talking about, folks... it was shyte! Can I say shyte Paul? The only film in which I was more bored than I was in Troy was Van Helsing - but at least Kate Beckinsale was wearing that ridiculous getup in Ven Helsing... Troy based on Homer Simpson's Illiad... Shyte!

to each his own i suppose. i did point out that what made it for me. little thing like the ephyrian goblets on the table that are incredibly specific to a time period

oooh go see it. like now!!! 'tis great, well that's what i thought anyways!
Great movie got to see it all last night, Peter O' Toole = Legend!
Roll on the Odyssey!
Penelope awaits!
I thought it was great :) Think Orlando is absolutely gorgeous but he was way too girly in this i think, acting wasnt up to scratch. Helen of Troys acting was brutal at times (not all the time cos she did some good crying scenes at the start)....did anyone else think that? Everyone else was excellent though :D
