View Full Version : The Passion of the Christ
Went to see the Passion of the Christ yesterday. Its a film directed by Mel Gibson - I dont think its out in Ireland yet. It is such an amazing film basically telling the story of Jesus Christs last hours. It has a rating of R and is so graphically violent - apparently a women had a heart attcak watching it last week.
some people over here(America) are saying that the movie is anti sematic- which I can see as Pontius Pilot is portrayed as being totally hesitant to condem Jesus and its the Jewish High priest who are portrayed as insisting on killing him.In my opinion its historically accurate from what I was thaught happened at Jesus' crucification.
Just thought Id share that with ye and definitly would recomend it.
Christianity aint a big deal to me but it sure looks like a good film.
Looks amazing considering the budget constrants.

I worried by this movie, we'kll probably get egged in work for even showing it!
But seriously i think Mel Gibson is fantastic for doing this, it was gonna be impossible to make this movie without offending one culture or another, but i think it'll be in prodominately catholic countries like ourselves that it'll have the greatest impact, only time will tell................

from what i've seen of this movie it looks good, i'm not even the slightest bit religious so i probly won't go see it but one thing is bothering me. i read a thing about it that said the film was in latin and aramaic or some other old language of the time in order to be 100% accurate, is this true?
if it is than why go to such lengths to make it so accurate and make jesus a white european looking guy, and the rest of the cast from the clips and interviews on tv. isn't it now believed that jesus was either black or middle eastern looking(from what they say on discoverey channel anyway).
anyone else think about this?

it would make perfect sense for jesus to be dark skinned, but then a white christ is just another example of how most of the bible is edited for the churches own goals. there's now a theory that the guy the jews asked for to be released (can't remember the name) and jesus were the same person. seems this other dudes first name was jesus aswell. theory goes that the second guy was invented so they could have a more legitimate reason to persecute the jews. what's strange to me is that everyone agrees that jesus was a practising jew until he went off and started his own religion

There's a third theory, of course. It's new and very controversial. It concerns a young bhiyo by the name of Jayzus Christy, soon to be immortalised on film - the Passion of Christy.
Although I still reckon noone can beat the Passion of St. Tibulus. Down with this sort of thing! (careful now)

Four churches in Kent are offering free cinema tickets to non-churchgoers in a bid to boost their congregations. However, the choice of films on the scheme is limited to one: Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ. A rather novel way to increase numbers .

there has been so much about this film in the papers, I just have to see it!! I said I wouldnt but the curiosity is killing me!!
Great great movie.
I got it off the net last week.
Not for the faint of heart though.
In Ireland it's after getting a 15's cert, despite every other country giving it the strictest rating available. Usually we rate things stricter than other countries, so yet again we get to see the Catholic bias present in Irish society

It's in a couple of languages according to that site , Aramaic / Latin / Hebrew, I didn't know that.
It got a 15's cert due to its educational content, in the same way Michael Collins got a PG cert.

one thing annoying me about this movie is the way the church is supporting it, encouraging people to go see it. from what i hear its a really violent movie(i haven't seen it tho so i can't say for sure how violent it is). any other movie with as much violence that got a 15pg rating the church would probibly have priests protesting about it father ted style. young people should never be encouraged to go watch prolonged scenes of violence(i heard a scene of jesus getting beaten or something lasts about 20 mins) even if it is religious and educational. it'll mess up their young minds.
isn't violence still violence even if it is supposed to have a good message of how jebus died for us.
It is the most affecting film i have ever seen....seriously upsetting alright. I was shaking for ages after it! Couldn't believe it is 15/PG. I dont think young children should go see it, way too violent for most of them. Dunno if i would watch it again, but i think it is owrth seeing. Makes you think...

It's 15PG so young children won't go see it.
I think people are missing the point with this movie. It's so violent because it is as accurate a representation as possible of what happened to Jesus. It was that violent then. If Mel Girbson left out half the violence, everyone would start complaining that it was just a watered down Hollywood version.
But I've yet to see it, so I don't know.
It is brutal in its depiction of Christ death. The whipping scene had me close to getting sick.
Im pissed off with this anti-semitic rant many people are saying, "they bastardise the jews!!!" Jewish dont deny they condemned him to death, and you expect them to be all caring and happy in the movie. Christ you didnt see germans running around concentration camps with daisys in Schindlers List now did we!
Regardless anyone whos even remotely fearful of a bit of brutallity and a bit of claret being split avoid this movie, its got pain/suffering throughout.
Still an amazing film.

The reason it got a 15pg cert is because the distributors cut a deal with the movie sensors. Thats why there are so many posters up for it warning of graphical and disturbing violence,
just for overkill the gate were given 8000 flyers for it all with the warning.

Hehe, apparently when they were shooting that scene, they could only do it once. The guys were actually whipping a board at the back and the actor was fake screaming. But one guy missed the board and hit the guy on the shoulder, so at one point there's a really real scream. Then a while later, the same guy missed the board again and hit Jesus on the same place! So there's another scream there. And poor jesus couldn't turn around and shout at him, because they only had one shot to do the scene.
Poor guy.
He he, i never knew that. Oooo that scene is awful though, isnt it. I was crouched on my seat jumping every time they whipped Him....oh and then after when they dragged Him out along the gound, oh that was horrific :(
yea it was pretty disgusting i work in a cinema so i got a preveiw of it and there was only 5 of us in the screen it was cool but yucky! also people bring their children in which is totaslly fucked up because its soooooooooooooo not for wee kids! people keep walking out!!
Aparently the movie was plagued with accidents too, The guy who played Jesus got struck by lightning and i think a member of the crew died...Looks like somebody doesnt want this movie to happen. :ghost:

Ya heard that he got struck twice and once while he was on the cross.
If thats not a message i dunno what is!:)
Its great to see that the critics are now doing a 360 and saying that yes, infact, this is a good movie.
I think Gibson did a great job making this movie on such a small budget.
Another good aspect is that the cast are relatively unknowns outside of their own countries (except for Monica Belluci who was in the second and third matrix movies as Phersephone), its good so see a movie get good reviews regardless of the fact that a major actor overshadows it, Hell most people dont even know that Mel Gibson directed it!

What about Robo-Jesus???
When Jesus was up on the cross at the end it was a robot because the weather was far too cold for Jim Caviezel to be up there in just a loin cloth!!!
I wanna see Mecha-Mary! :D

Are you talking about me or Ki? Cause I only jumped twice; the snake and the water parts. Ki was bouncing all over the place, dunno if you saw her though!
And didn't Jim Caviezel dislocate his shoulder cause they dropped the cross on it? Bloody cursed.

That rat bastard Mel Gibson will get wait for it, wait for it $400 million dollers after tax for himself. i mean my god.....

I think my god is the whole point.
I hated it so much, but I hate movies that upset you, I spent most of it with my eyes closed and my fingers in my ears, so I missed a lot of it. The devil was cool though. But I cried all the way through the torture scene (even though I didn't see much of it) and the crucifixion scene. Be glad you weren't that poor woman sitting on my right, she was so pissed off at me, she kept sighing loudly in my direction!
But didn't Jebus have a great set of legs at the end of the film when he was all nekkid? Mmmmm. Nummy.
I reckon they should make The Passion of The Christ - The Game. Wouldn't it be great? Press Triangle to whip! Hold down L1 for a whipping boost!

Yea, but the guy not only directed it, but also funded it too.
This was the kind of movie that could very easily gone wrong and he could have lost more than the 400million...
I respect the guy alot for taking the risk, he went against hollywood and proved all his critics wrong.

I am going to be first in line at The Life of Brian. Jehovah! Jehovah! Jehovah!
The freakiest bit about the movie- apart from satan herself, is when she has that really ugly dwarf in her arms - its disturbing and totally out of place,
in my media class we were talking about it and it apparently represents the common image of mary with the baby jesus in her arms and thus mocks jesus as his death is inevitable and so he will never grow old.
cant remember hearing about that one in first class ms callaghans religion!!!
