A long-lost aunt was home from distant parts and I saw her on Friday evening. She hadn't seen me for years and while I always had a reputation in my extended family as being somewhat difficult, this appears to have hardened into something else. She was shocked when she saw me, I don't know what she expected but she was visibly shocked. Her first comment was "Look at you!" and while I was going through the usual pretence of caring how she and her family have been she kept interrupting me with exclamations like "But you're so pretty! And so slim! You look great! Oh my God!" I wanted to slap her cos I'm not slim or pretty enough that it's worth five minutes of stunned praise, but suppose my status as Troublesome Single Crazy Niece led her to believe I would look like Mary Harney.
My extended families always, always wreck my head. But I do take some small satisfaction in knowing that the head-wrecking is mutual. :D
