hmmmmmmm, don't know about those song titles, some of them are very cool like frantic and purify, but sweet amber doesn't sound very metal,
and that song that was on the net "dead kennedy rolls" isn't there, which is good cause it was only an average song.

also it seems cool the way the kept the second track title the same as the album title just like ride, master and justice. which is definately a good thing.

and they will be playing a track off the album on kroq radio in l.a. in a week or so, i'm sure it'll find its way on to the net. can't wait.

As we are speaking, the idea is to do a limited print run of 3 other color options for your choosing and viewing pleasure. We are still finalizing the exact specific details to this multiple cover run. Oh jot oh boy oh joy. its on it's way. YAYAYAYAY! I'm dead excited.

On the hair subject. Rob - grand. Lars - put the bleach away, for the sake of the children (namely me). Jaymz - man... let it grow!!! Come on, circa S&M era? Please? Kirk - same. It's nicest in s&M too!

And I think this justifies the lack of guitar solos - "Not one track features a guitar solo, yet there's no lack of dizzying sonic firepower" Come on June 10th!

i got a few of those instramental things off kazaa too, some seem great, others are crap, also theres a christian metal band that sound a lot like metallica but aren't all over kazaa, the singer sounds really like james so don't be fooled, the only difference is the music isn't as good and all the lyrics are about god.

Tomorrow, Wednesday April 30th, the band will shoot a video for the title track of their upcoming album, 'St. Anger'. This will be the first track from the album going out to... wherever the fuck it goes out to.

The location will not be your normal-run-of-the-mill place. Metallica is headed to the big house, not just any big house, but THE BIG HOUSE, San Quentin State Prison, spitting distance from Metallica HQ. In exchange for using the grounds, the band will perform an hour long set the next day, Thursday, for the - eh - captive audience.

http://www.metallica.com/news/2003/images/apr29_pic1.jpg
The boys will be working with the Malloy Brothers to direct the video. Malloy Brothers have previously worked with, among others, the Foo Fighters, 311, plus developing and filming their own brand of Surf Movies.

2 see vid. (http://www.metallica.com/index.asp?item=1021)

As previously reported, Metallica decided to shoot the video for the title track, "St. Anger", at The Big House - San Quentin State Prison. Here we are, back at Metallica HQ, after spending the last 18 hours at San Quentin. I think I am not only speaking for myself when I say that today's visit made a huge impression on everyone. There were many raw emotions going around between band members, crew, correctional officers, and inmates.http://www.metallica.com/news/2003/images/apr30_pic1.jpg

i have seen hundreds and hundreds of Metallica shows all over the world and numerous video shoots. Today's event will definitely go down in Metallica history. The band entered the prison around 7am this morning. When they took their first steps on the prison grounds, they looked at each other and knew this would not be just another video...
http://www.metallica.com/news/2003/images/apr30_pic2.jpg

The first thing we are told by our designated correctional officer is, "San Quentin has a No hostage policy". This basically means if someone gets taken hostage there will be no negotiating, you are on your own buddy. Good morning to you too...from there our day continued.http://www.metallica.com/news/2003/images/apr30_pic3.jpg The video was shot with the band performing at various locations throughout the compound. From outside, during the prisoners lunch break, to inside the cell block. This video was truly unique... everyone involved were authentic inmates & correctional officers. One of the main correctional officers, that worked there for over 22 years, explained that no one has EVER done anything like what Metallica did here today. He further explained that when he informed the inmates about the upcoming event, the response was overwhelming. He also stated that the feeling is that music is something that everyone from correctional officers to inmates have in common and feel very passionate about. At the end of the night, when the band were on their way home James, looking very emotional, says to the other guys - "This was the best one ever...wow".http://www.metallica.com/news/2003/images/apr30_pic4.jpg Metallica will be back tomorrow at San Quentin to perform for the inmates, as a thanks for their help in making this video and the experience so unforgettable. Keep checking this site for more updates & pictures.

LIVE AT SAN QUENTIN | 05/01/2003 << GO BACK

I noticed him standing there, shirtless, back to me, heavily tattooed. He was a skinhead, as in no hair. He wore a huge, immovable grin and black wrap sunglasses. One of the guards told me he was a 'lifer (in jail for life, no chance of parole). The initials 'FTW' were tattooed onto the nape of neck. 'Fuck The World'. I doubted he was prone to outbursts of immovable grinning, or any displays of happiness come to think of it. Of course this man was excited that Metallica was here, but more than anything I sensed he was enjoying an all-too-rare feeling of being proud. Proud that they'd offered to do a show for the inmates. Proud that they'd donated $10,000 towards the San Quentin Giants baseball field, about 400 ft opposite the makeshift stage in the main exercise yard. But more than anything, I sensed that he was proud they'd volunteered to offer a little bit of relief from an endless stretch of time, and by doing so, to recognize that so many of these prisoners are human beings too.

No-one had imagined that this, the unorthadox but undeniably first show of the forthcoming tour for 'St Anger' (as well as Robert Trujillo's full live debut) would be at San Quentin Prison. And what would become alarmingly recurrent throughout the show was the sheer uniqueness of this situation, the reality that for everything Metallica have experienced in their career, moments like this are reminders that whatever your experience, however many albums you've sold, wherever you might have visited, there's always something, or somewhere new to go.
http://www.metallica.com/news/2003/images/may1_sq2.jpg As I took in the slowly milling crowd before the show (inmates wandered this main exercise yard, site of the gig itself, largely untouched, yet just as it seemed you were in the middle of some inmates without a guard, two of them would suddenly just appear) I realized a) how fortunate I am and b) how much I sometimes take Metallica for granted. This feeling was heightened when a guard told me that the audience was comprised of approximately 50% lifers, who, along with other members of the population that had elected to do their time quietly and constructively as possible, witnessed a set stuffed with old favorites such as 'Creeping Death', 'For Whom The Bell Tolls'. 'Master Of Puppets' and 'Battery'. For them, this was the sort of rarity that none of us can relate to, and I found myself coming back to that thought many, many times as I tapped my foot and remembered tens of dozens of Metallica shows worldwide. For them this was it. There won't be another chance to see Metallica live again...

Considering this was Robert Trujillo's first full live performance, and considering how little time the band have had to rehearse, this was a fine performance. Loud, taut and far more often than not, very, very tight. I thought it really started to take off with 'Master Of Puppets', whilst the guys felt it happening from 'Seek And Destroy' on. The audience? Some, those in front of the tressel tables set up as a barricade, were whooping and hollering, throwing 'metal' horns to the wind, baring their tattoos for the assembled news cameras and perhaps enjoying a memory or two of shows from the old days before San Quentin was home. That was a major reminder for the whole afternoon...that whilst we all got to go home, the audience lived there.
http://www.metallica.com/news/2003/images/may1_sq4.jpg Before the show started, James addressed the inmates much like sponsors discuss matters of emotion and rehabilitation when in treatment. '...'St. Anger' was a patron saint I made up for myself as I have struggled with anger issues all my life,' he said to the silent onlookers, 'I never knew how to get it out in a healthy way.' He then spoke of how many of the inmates had doubtless had 'a lotta misspent anger and some are paying higher consequences' whilst also sharing his fear that he might have been an inmate were it not for music whilst offering thanks for what music has given him. But his most poignant sentiment, the one which so many people fail to see on a daily basis, came when he addressed the issue of prisoners also being human beings. 'I was guilty of compartmentalizing before,' he said, 'perhaps not wanting to see the souls in here. But there are lots of souls here... and I'm not afraid to say that I love you guys.' After having at one point stopped to breathe before declaring that he was a little nervous, he concluded by saying, 'everyone is born good and we are very proud to be in your house playing music for you.'

After a presentation from the Head of the Men's Electory Committee at San Quentin, inmate Marvin Munch (quote: 'I feel you on that anger thing...people really appreciate you performing...when you leave here, let people know we have souls too!') and a certificate from the San Quentin Vietnam Veteran inmates who helped with the gear for both yesterday's video shoot and today's show, the band punched into 'Creeping Death'.

http://www.metallica.com/news/2003/images/may1_sq5.jpg As I already mentioned, Robert Trujillo is a perfect fit both aurally and visually, and the man will not put foot or fingers wrong if this performance is anything to judge by. The tuned-down 'Seek...' was a real rumbler, but what started to become reality in this strangest of settings, was how lyrics shifted meaning because of the surroundings. Kirk mentioned noticing it during 'Creeping Death' but I really noticed it during the razor rendition of 'Master Of Puppets', James barking the words 'master master, where are the dreams that I've been after?' and instantly switching the meaning from drugs to (in many cases) this audience's life situation.http://www.metallica.com/news/2003/images/may1_sq6.jpg By the time 'Enter Sandman' and 'Battery' closed the set, the inmates were loose and happy, hooting, hollering, whooping and yelling, a banner stating METALLICA RULES THE WORLD flapping in the breeze, whilst the band were in full swing, tight, taut and mean. Indeed, for a moment it could've been the front row at any show stuffed full of rabid Metalliheads, sweaty tattooed torsos and a flock of arms pumping the air. But a quick glint of the razor wire, or the endless fencing, or the manned lookout towers were an instant reminder that these guys were prisoners, first and Metallifans after that.

http://www.metallica.com/news/2003/images/may1_sq8.jpg As if to cap off the bizarre observations, beyond them in the far right and left-hand corners of the yard were two intense games of basketball and baseball, with the participants of each comfortably ignoring a gig that had fans lining the hill outside the prison walls trying to look in. You see this Metallica show, however unique and however good, came during the players' weekly 4 hour sporting time allotment. And as a guard explained to me, nothing messes with that time and nothing can drag the men away from their chosen sports, not even Metallica.

Afterwards there was a great deal of relief that everything had gone so well, and a generally huge 'stoked' vibe about Robert's firs gig, a performance where he proved beyond belief that spiritually Metallica's always been his home. And before heading out there was time for the guys, their loved ones and a few of us to take a tour of the execution chamber, yet another wholly sad and humbling experience to remind us all how Metallica's performance today will have come as such an enormous chink of light to so many.

http://www.metallica.com/news/2003/images/may1_sq7.jpg And as we shuffled off into the night air, as the band headed back to HQ to pick up bags and take the jet down to LA for the ICON event, it was impossible not to think about the fact that many of today's audience will likely never leave, never wear different clothes and never have the luxury of choices we take for granted...

Oh, here's that set-list as it ran...

Creeping Death
For Whom the Bell Tolls
Seek and Destroy
Fade To Black
Fuel
Sad But True
Master Of Puppets
One
Enter Sandman
Battery

Mtv:Icon - a song by song analysis by JenJen.

Nothing Else Matters: Don't attempt a song you can't play. Also, even if you can, tune your fucking guitar. Even my mother was cringing.

Fuel: To the durmmer: put shoes on you big-feeted man! To Avril: watch out, Im coming for you you fucking stupid bitch.

One: Rockin. Pity ot was edited down so much.

Sanitarium: I cried. I cried. Fucking wanker asshole JERK. 'Leave me me alone! Leave me alone! Leave me alone!' Nearly punched the TV

But the medle needed no words... brilliant. just brilliant.

i don't believe nobody is saying how good sum41 were, i thought they rocked. the only cover worth commenting onwas there little medly thing.
sure the singing wasn't great cause his voice was too weak but they were the only band who attempted a solo, an actual solo. and the master of puppets solo(not easy), fairly good job they did of it too. them and korn were the only 2 i thought did metallica justice.

if the whole thing wasn't organised by mtv they would have gotten some proper metal bands who metallica really have influenced much more by metallica than fred durst, like killswitch engage, opeth and many others.

SUM41 were on at the start before the music, I missed them wednesday but got 'em thursday, they were brilliant, I thought! Was it just me or was the sound REALLY poor? I taped it both times it was on and both times the sound was dire for the show (with very annoying static-y buzz at the higher and lower frequency sounds, grrr) but grand during ther ads!

Also, I was a bit annoyed at the format. I taped Classic Albums off UTV a while back and it was brilliant altogether, but it was totally laid-back like 'Well, when we listene to the Justice album it was pretty obvioud we needed guidance... hahaha' (Jaymz) whereas Icon was like "Cliff died! It was horrible! I was emotionally traumatised! ARGH!" I'm not a sound-byte type person, and for the most part this was.

I also totally agree with the poor choice of band theory... they SHOULD have picked people who were influenced by them. For example, until 2 weeks before 'Complicated' was released, Avril Latrine (this is the honest to god truth) had never even heard of them.

Lars's drum kit was nice. He was airdrumming to all the covers, it was cute! Rob seemed totally nice, but fucking MENTAL when he was playing, I was cringing in my sofa. and he spreads his legs even further apart than Jaymz when he plays! That's not allowed!

the outlaw torn
16-05-2003, 19:05
rob was cool, he was playing pretty much on the ground he plays so low.
and the sound quality was kinda bad, james's voice sounded different than in any interview i've ever heard.
also the speed they played the songs at was unbelievable, someone timed battery at 210bpm!!!

and those stupid mtv editor guys are supposed to have cut out this really funny beavis and butthead sketch about metallica, some guy that was at the show posted on the metallica message board and said it was the best part(except for tallica playing). maybe it will turn up somewhere, someday.

metallica played their first show last night as kind of a 4 night warm up for the tour, they got some good bands supporting too from what i heard(death angel and cky and a few others).
their set list was mental:
Hit The Lights
The Four Horsemen
Harvester Of Sorrow
Welcome Home (Sanitarium)
Frantic
Sad But True
Phantom Lord
Leper Messiah
No Remorse
Fade To Black
Master Of Puppets
Damage Inc
Ride The Lightning
For Whom the Bell Tolls
Blackened
Last Caress
Am I Evil?
Motorbreath

mostly old really thrashy stuff, no load or reload(whish is kinda bad cause i liked those albums). but this seems to be a good indicator as to what they plan to do at their summer shows and the direction st.anger will take.
they are playing the second show right now as i type, can't wait to hear if it ws as good.

The press kit had alot of clips from the album in studio...the guitar sounded lethal but the only thing im having reservations about is the singing...its trashy but it wont be fully unless those "creeping death","harvester of sorrows" lyrics are present...what do ye think?

the outlaw torn
20-05-2003, 15:43
i thought the singing was ok, from a few reviews i've read there might be some old stlye hetfield shouty type singing going on. as for the lyrics i am a bit worried about those, like shoot me again(i hope that song is much better than what i heard).

the only thing that worried me was the drum sound, lars is very proud of this new snarey drum kit and sound he has, but i didn't like it at all, may i just didn't the final mix so the sound wasn't as good as it will be.

well we'll all see in 20 days time!!!

just got the latest metal hammer magazine. it has the first official review of st.anger. a lot of what the reviewer says is the same as all the other internet reviews i've read, but he doesn't have one bad thing to say.

i thought this was great until i read another bit of the article he wrote about metallica, the guy gave short reviews of all past metallica albums(for the linken park generation who never heard them). he had the usually complimenets about their first 3 albums but then he ripped justice for all apart saying it was all over the place, black album was their best work and reload is better than load!! if thats his opinions about past albums i dunno can i believe what he says about st.anger.

JennyPen

I read that Hammer too. I was dead angry, he was saying 'jump in the fire' was a big fat corporate sell-out and the only redeeming feature to save it then was the bass solo (take one!). I agreed with most of what he said but the one word that was missing was 'comparatively'. Allow me to demonstrate:

" Load is COMPARATIVELY a poor album". I'd like to see say, Shrimp Bizkit come up with an album that has half as many hooks and grooves as much as LOAD. I Like Re-LOAD, it was the first album I bought after the Black Album (which was bought after S+M, I'm so new to this, but I've made up for lack of experience with enthusiasm to boot, as anyone will tell ya!). I mean, put it this way. The three worst songs (in my opinion) that they ever wrote - lyrically, 'Escape' (I mean come on!), musically, 'Cure' (it just seems to all fall apart at the chorus!) and by general consensus, I Disappear. I love all these songs, in fact, there isn't a Tallica song yet written that I don't like. I really harted what that journo said bout Justice 'cos even though the sound is terribly dry and lacking in bass etc etc etc, it's still a monumental album, incredible and a testiemtn to their creative and amazing side.

By the way, for those who didn't read it, the guy basically said that Hit The Lights was grerat until a 'totally directionless, unnecessary Hammett solo'. I'd like to see him play it. Little twit.

That said, he didn't knock LOAD or Re-LOAD like a lot of people do. And for that he gets a bit of respect from me, 'cos I HATE it when people knowck two perfectly good albums. And the performances of the songs from them on the two DVD's, Cunning Stunts and S & M, show just how great they are live, speshally Fuel. Hell, if anyone is a musician here, ever try playing Attitude from Re-LOAD? It's my absolute favorite song to drum 'cos it's just so much FUN to play, much like the rest of those two albums - they're fun albums. You can't be angry ALL the time, and now - after a brief respite from the anger, they're back!

is it just me or does this song kinda suck? the drums are dreadful, theres no solo and the singing is very un-hetfield like.

the mellow st.anger round my neck bit is a bit crap for metallica but it works well with the weird bass in with it. the heavy bit is really brilliant, the lack of solos is a big issue for me(solos make metallica great) but i think i could grow to like this song alot.

I think some people are being blinded by their Metallica fandom. The song St. Anger is really really poor sounding. The drums sound off and hollow, like hitting empty paint cans. The singing is pathetic, no emotion can be found in it. The guitar seems barely audible over the hollow drums which is a sign that this song was poorly mastered. It is more the producers fault than the bands fault but you think they would of noticed the emptyness of the song.

i'm not blinded by my love of metallica, i hated the new songs when i first heard them, but they grow on you. the production doesn't seem the best but just wait to give judgement untill the album is in your cd player. the drums do sound a bit weird and cheapy/hollow.

Where to start?? With a statement I guess. I am disappointed with St. Anger.

It's OK. Not amazing, not fucking incredible and certainly not the album to change everything. That said, I'm probably the last person on this planet who was actually HAPPY with the way they were, I didn't think they needed changing for the 'better'.

It's *alright*. The songs aren't bad.

But I'm actually angered by the problems I have with it. There's very poor balancing on it (especially on the DVD, christ, the drums are TOO loud and Kirk is TOO quiet). Speaking of Kirk, trying to look hard by shouting looks very very stupid. We KNOW he's a genius guitar player, but we ALL know he ain't the manliest of 'em. He doesn't have to try and look so bad. The drum sound expecially the hollow snare and untuned bass drum (that said you can't really tune a bass drum, it's too low,but they did it better before), is irritating. And he's using a crash ride. I HATE crash rides. Where's the ping ride gone (ok, borderline obsessional now, I know!).

That said the riffage is (argh can't think of any other word except) frantic. But I can't shake the feeling that the whole affair is just too serious. For a behind the scenes (well, sort of) DVD, it's no fun! You watch Cunning Stunts for 5 minutes and you're laughing, they're electric. There's just none of that on the DVD or CD. That said, on Mtv:Icon, they played incredibly, it really sounded great.

If in Dublin they only play St. Anger stuff though, I will be so let down you can't imagine. I really really liked them, and always have. St. Anger isn't 'better'. It's good, really good, a lot better than some other stuff that#s around right now. But it's just not FUN! And that's what they used to be about... having fun...

Oh, I nearly forgot! I had forgotten ALL about the Grynch (Jaymz's new guitar). But fuck me if that wasn't the most beautiful thing I ever did see. And damn it if it didn't sound evil (Invisible Kid)! Haha!

07-06-2003, 01:49

on the dvd did ye see our boy rob! what a nut, the way in the dvd he was messing with lars looking doing strange stuff, lars tryed doing it back but looked like a fool (as robs old band 1s said cool is just 1 letter away from fool!)

ok if you haven't guessed by now i'm a really big metallica fan, my last post was saying how i liked the album a lot and i do, but at the time of typing i was only on my 3rd or so listen, first i ran thru each song a few times to see what the album as a whole was like.

this album is truely great and i think i can easily stand up tall in the cd shops next to black album and the loads(which i love also) but have a listen to anything from the 80's by metallica and then listen to st.anger afterwards, they seem to have totally lost their genius for this album.

i love the riffs, james's vocals are amazing, the bass is outstanding, some really good bass riffs. but the drums and production along with the lack of something really special put this as number 8 on my list of favourite metallica albums.

i can prove this albums non genius/specialness by doing a kinda test thing, without thinking too much and having the album off, hum a riff(apart from st.anger/frantic) or lead guitar part.
now with out thinking hum something off any other album, not a problem, but i'm still trying to think of a st.anger riff.

Yes happy joy joy I agree Put the clip up on the snare! It's there for Frantic and a bit of St. Anger, but it's all like a high-strung tom otherwise!

On further listenage I have decided that it's a lot better than I first thought. Especially Dirty Window - that's about the best song so far in my opinion - and yon war scream of kill kill kill kill KILL at the very end of the whole album is fucking scary, you're sitting there either deeply disturbed or lost in demensia. Roll on the 20th! Someone was trying to scare me the other day, telling me that they're just gonna play St. Anger stuff. I thinks otherwise, 'cos they played a little bit of everything at download (rock on surprise gigs, cool!), and at San Quentin, and even at mtv:Icon. Methinks it will be a gig to remember.

What I'M dying to know is, what the heck is that thingy that Lars plays on the DVD during Dirty Window (during the 'I'm judge and I'm jury...' bit). It's cool.

unfortunatly st. anger fails shams patented endurance driving test. it's good and all but it just doesn't work to drive to. for an album that good it's missing soomething vital (solos's perhaps) i'm not saying i won't listen to it when driving but its not going to be my first choich by a long shot

the rock am ring show was good, but it didn't seem like the old metallica we all know and love till half way thru the show. and what was with the taped intro to blackened and battery!!! why didn'y they play them on their instraments? also kirk was a little off leaving out a few of the smaller solos from creeping death and blackened.

about st.anger, i agree with pheonix, after more and more listens it does seem to get slightly better each time, but really a metallica album should start from a high point and reach unreachable hights.
the main thing i find not liking about this album is that i could have written some of the riffs on it, whereas i could never have hoped to even think of a riff of similar godliness on any other album.

enter sandman, the simplist of riffs but only kirk could have come up with it, king nothing is just brilliant.
the riffs on the early stuff are only brilliant-seek and destroy,no remorse, the call of ktula is just fantastic, not just speed riffs.

So there we were, in Germany, in Nuremburg Germany, in FC Nuremburg's massive soccer stadium to be precise, when in walks a priceless little bit of Metallihistory with his old buddy Kirk Hammett...Scott Ian. yes, Scotty from Anthrax, the diminutive riff machine, the schizmated live aggro merchant, one of the main drivers behind Noo Yawk's most famous modern metallists. Scott and Kirk have been friends for many, many years, always sharing stories on a variety of subjects from guitars to movies. And the two bands have always shared times together...perhaps the most legendary stint happened in 1986 when 'thrax supported Metallica through Europe, when the Cliffage was flying, James was crashing all over the place on boards with wheels and both bands were quite literally raging 28/7.
So when the Metontourmesiter Nic suggested to me that y'all might really, no, REALLY enjoy reading what HE thought of the first gig of this Summer 2003 tour, I had to put my hands together and agree that a review from Scott Ian would be honest, passionate, unique, fun and (given l'histoire) very, very cool. And with that, I'll hand it over to Scott...

"Hi, my name is James."
And the fifty thousand loyal subjects he was holding in the palms of his mighty rhythmic hands roared in agreement. "And that's Kirk, that's Lars, and over here is the new member of the family, Robert Trujillo. We are Metallica."
Yes they are.

http://www.metallica.com/news/2003/images/june6_6.jpg
And if you ever had the slightest inkling of doubt, or of slippage, or the idea that they were ready to rescind their title and pass the torch, you'd better rethink it son, because Metallica remains firmly in place on the throne.

And they are not about to give it up to anyone. Bang your heads with respect! And I did. We all did. From the members of all the other bands that opened the show, to the aforementioned fifty thousand loyal, we all participated in the giant metallic mass that Metallica gave at the Rock Im Park festival Friday night in Nurnberg

Why all the religious metaphors?
Because that's what being at this concert felt like. A man reborn. A band reborn. A newfound positivism that has brought an even more aggressive vibe to a band that's never been lacking in the balls department. I've seen Metallica. You can say that I've seen the shit out of Metallica. From the early pre Kill'Em All days when "by any means necessary" was the modus operandi, to now where the same work ethic holds true. More than just blood, sweat and tears, it is their whole life. They'd give anything for the music, anything for the show, and anything for the fans.

From when I first saw them in a cold-water squat masquerading as a rehearsal space in 1982, to the rarified air of stadium headliners, Metallica has remained true to themselves. They were as on fire Friday night as much as I've ever seen them. They took the most impersonal, giant-size venue and turned it into an intimate show for their friends. That's what it felt like. It was inspiring. They made you feel like they were playing for you, and that they were so fucking happy to be doing it. The feeling was palpable. The crowd was caught up in this vortex of sonic energy that wouldn't let go.

http://www.metallica.com/news/2003/images/june6_3.jpg
I'm not going to go into a song by song analysis of the show. It was a situation where the sum was greater than it's parts. You had to have the whole thing. I will say this though. Seeing Metallica play Hit The Lights, Four Horsemen, No Remorse, Master Of Puppets, Harvester Of Sorrow, Blackened, Creeping Death, Enter Sandman, Frantic, St. Anger etc. etc. is like getting to see Olivier play Hamlet, or DeNiro as Travis Bickle, or Jordan play basketball, or Ali fight. Not to be redundant but you get the idea. You're seeing the best doing what they do best. http://www.metallica.com/news/2003/images/june6_4.jpg
I've got to leave you with a toast that I believe say's it best. This goes out not only to Metallica, but also to everyone that loves this thing of ours."Here's to us, and those like us, and all the rest are cunts."

See ya on tour,
Scott Ian

Head over to www.anthrax.com to see what those guys are up to!

i was looking at the album charts in some news paper and i saw that st.anger wasn't at no.1
no.3 last week and no.4 this week, thats not too bad but when i saw that the stereophonics had pushed them down the chart i couldn't believe it. radiohead ok, not too bad but the stereophonics doin better than metallica!!!

on the bright side its no.1 in america and england.
i know sales shouldn't matter but its nice to see your fave artists doin well.

did any one buy the st.anger single?
there are 2 different cds available with different b sides on each, i know a few of the b sides are ramones covers but i'm not sure about the others, like the song commando, is that a metallica song or a cover? i haven't got the singles so i haven't heard the bsides.

JennyPen

Metallica NEVER give new songs on b-sides, 'cos amazingly b-sides don't exist in the states, so it's not standard stuff. All along the years it's been live songs and covers, they're not exactly a band of over-writers (well, they did for Load and look what happened.)

they have way to many songs written for this album. over 30 james said in some interview i saw, they just picked 11 that they thought was best.
they released one of the songs(dead kenedys rolls) last year, well a live version of it.
i'm hoping they will have more material released within the year.

oh and i found out commando is a ramones song also, is it good?haven't heard it yet.

They wrote this album weirdly - normally it's just Jaymz sits down and writes them, but this time they had Lars and Kirk write stuff too. If you look inside the album cover, all of the writing is either Jaymz or Lars'. Lars is the smaller writing of the two, Jaymz's is the bigger, all capitals one.

before they wrote songs which just started out as riffs, mostly james wrote em but kirk and jason and cliff came up with a good few. then james and lars used to arrange the riffs and make them into songs, very carefully done with a lot of time put into it from all the interviews and things i've ever read or seen.

but with st.anger it was a group effort all at the same time and songs were written on the spot by everyone!

theres a dvd on the making of st.anger coming out, i can't wait for it for an explanation of st.anger

you don't want to get a bus up and down on the same day, i did that before for some concert and it sucked, by the time the bus arrives at the venue there is a massive que outside the place and you'll have missed getting up the front.

but wednesday is a stupid day for the concert with lots of people having work and unable to get 2 days off to go up the day before.

i suppose its not too bad, get to have a good laugh on the way up. but i just love gettin to concerts early, so i can get up the front. i hope there won't be a bit gap between the crowd and the stage in the rds. at the rock am ring show on mtv there was a hugh gap.
