I'm finally getting my grant on Friday, and it's kul that the government is giving me money to learn and all but it ain't that much.
I'm doing a 26 hour week (well I'm supposed to be anyway) if I was working minimum wage for those hours I'd get roughly €150 a week, instead I get a little over that much a month.
I was talking to a member of ógra fianna fáil the other day and I asked him what his opinion was on the pitiful grant situation, his answer: how much of your grant do you spend on cigarettes and alcohol? (this was an irrelevant question which i was insulted with but I was glad to see the smugness in his face dissapear when I replied...)
None, I neither smoke nor consume alcohol.
His next reason for the joke of a grant was this:
Well we're giving everyone free education, no matter what their income levels, you can't expect a decent grant aswell.
Now I nearly lost the plot at this stage, I am against student fees and I don't think that reintroducing them will help anyone but it's really sad to see someone resort to this as their reason for my lack of living money.

If I dropped out of college now, I could claim full unemployment and rent allowance, but I actually want to be here, I'm insane.

Student life sucks.
