Dear Student,
In a recent Milkround survey, a massive 31% of you claimed you never
believed everything you read in graduate recruitment brochures. Indeed,
only 34 of the 640 voters (5%) did hold faith in the sleek publications,
whilst 64% thought the situation varied from company to company.
The majority of the large graduate recruiters spend thousands on their
recruitment publications, but to what avail? Do you pour over every word
in the hope that somewhere within its glossy pages you’ll find the
ultimate graduate offer? According to some comments received here at
Milkround, it’s unlikely you ever will – in fact, on perusing ten or
fifteen brochures, you generally begin to wonder if you’re going to find
one that says anything different from the rest.
Buzz words abound. If you believe what you read then “immediate
responsibility” on your “individually tailored programme” will, (with the
constant support of your mentors and buddies) fast-track you to dynamic,
management positions in no time at all. No two days will be the same on
your unhindered and petal strewn path to success – you are, after all, the
future.
So why do companies spend their resources on recruitment brochures?
Students obviously have the intelligence not to be sucked in by endlessly
repeated jargon. Yet although 95% of you have little or no faith in what
you are reading, you don’t let that judgement affect your decision to
apply.
“I just use them to get the pertinent details (contact, application form,
etc) – I’ve already decided which companies I want to apply to long before
I look at any brochures”
Is that all graduate recruitment brochures are worth to potential
candidates? If so, it would appear that many of the leading blue-chips
are wasting a lot of resources. But what do you think? Has reading
recruitment brochures lead to disillusionment in the workplace? Or perhaps
you were delighted to find your job was exactly as you were lead to
believe? Have you ever been surprised by a brochure, (pleasantly or
otherwise)? If so, tell us about it.
Whatever your comments, the address, as ever, is feedback@milkround.com.
