Given my rather hysterical reaction to anyone calling Creed good, I must admire your attempt to engage in debate with me about the relative merits of Foo Fighters...

In my humble opinion, the Foo Fighters are a wonderful band but I disagree with you if you are implying that they sound like Nirvana. I'm sure no-one would have any real difficulty in telling the difference between the two bands and therefore I can't agree that he is "flogging Kurt Conbian's dead horse". If you want a band who are doing that, you should look no further than The Vines (who are blatant Nirvana copyists). You're right in saying that the Foos sound more mainstream than Nirvana did but I admire Dave Grohl immensely. He is a wonderful musician, good singer, gifted songwriter and seems like a genuinely nice guy and so I can't agree that The Foos only became popular because he was in Nirvana. Lets be honest, it's not as if Sweet 75 (the bass player's band) made any inroads into musical history. The Foo Fighters will be remembered as the excellent band that emerged from the ashes from Nirvana and without any semblance of quality, this would not have happened...

(I'm actually proud of myself - I didn't resort to insulting anyone's taste in music!!!)

Nirvana were the most influential band of the 90's so every band formed that play hard rock were inevitably influenced by them. As for being a good guy, I've read enough stories about class things Dave Grohl has done for fans to make me think that he's a nice guy - after all, I suspect that most bands couldn't give a crap about their fans so fair play to him...

Don't get me started on the Pixies. I believe they are one of the most over-rated bands of all time. I'm not saying anymore...

jwalk - radiohead and the smashing pumpkins openly admit that the pixies are one of their major influences. johnny greenwood when asked y he didn't play guitar much on the last 2 albums said 'theres only so many times you can rip of pixies and pumpkins riffs'!.

and if they're not big enuf 4 u. nirvana based their entire sound on the pixies. dave grohl admits it himself. they played quite verses and loud chorus', just like the pixies (this is different from most punk, cos punk was usually the same constant level of noise for the whole song). the pixies may not have invented it, but, they made it VERY popular.

I realise that the Pixies were hugely influential on Nirvana but while I think Nirvana were good, they're not my favourite band either so that doesn't move me. 'Smells like Teen Spirit' is a direct Pixies rip-off though. However, post-Pablo Honey (which was pretty crap anyway), I can't really see the Pixie comparisons with Radiohead. If they created something as good as 'OK Computer', then I might have some respect for them...

The point is that I realise how influential the Pixies were. That doesn't mean I think they're any good. After all, the Beatles are considered quite influential and everyone knows how terrible they are...

How is it irrelevant exactly? This whole arguement is imbedded with how influential bands are and just because the Beatles were original and influential, it doesn't mean they are any good (with a couple of notable exceptions). Methinks you have nailed your Beatles-loving colours to the wall...

Hmmm...

I can understand why people would get upset about me slagging off bands like The Beatles and The Pixies because they are so popular but the fact that people got upset about me "dissing" Creed means that I do like music...

I love music (and to suggest that I don't is a fallacy given that I'm in a band, I DJ in a club in town and I have over 400 CDs) and because I was little dismissive of a band that everyone likes, there is uproar. I have not suggested that any of you are stupid for liking the Beatles yet you all jump down my throat...

They ARE over-rated though and they have NOTHING on the Stones...

Rant over...

Ahhh if we all lived in a world where music taste was dictated by one man. The point about this site is that you write about music and have OPINIONS on it. So the rule from now on is that if a person don't like a band that everyone likes then you must 'shut up' because no-one gives a 'flying fuck'...

In fairness to Girly-so-Groovey, she may not like Foo Fighters but she expressed her opinion in an articulate manner and even though people didn't agree with her, she wasn't told to 'shut up'. Why is that then?? Smacks of double standards, Bill and/or Ted...

the beatles are over-rated but i still think that they're excellent. wouldn't think the rolling stones are miles ahead of them though. sympathy for the devil sounds like a rip off of a tim buckley song.
as for the jonny greenwood comment, he just said that cos at the time it was cool to slag off guitar music, y'know, cos thom was doing it. and i quote "i was embarrassed by all melody..."
bit of a silly thing for a musician to say really? thom=bit of a plonker (but still an excellent musician)

for the record i have nothing against people who don't like the beatles or who think they are over rated. thats their choice and as we live in a supposedly democratic and free society (please excuse the cynicism) that is their constitutional right. it doesn't mean i have to agree with them but i'm not going to hate them for it either. i believe was the first one to use the phrase "flying fuck" so let me clarify what i meant in the context of that post, i will listen to the music i want to listen and no one will change that. i don't care what other people think, i enjoy the music and so therefore it doesn't bother me that others don't like it. i force very few people to listen to anything and then it's normally in my car or house and if you don't like it on one's keeping you from leaving. yes some bands are over rated but thats life. we (the music buying public) put these bands up on a pedestal that they may or may not deserve it is up to each and every indvidual to decide which band is in which group.

In fairness, Mr. Belly, my rant was not aimed at you. I admire your not giving a crap what other people think and you are right in everything you said. My beef was with the other two for (a) suggesting that I knew nothing about music and (b) telling me to f-off just because I didn't like the music they liked. I have no problem arguing about music in an articulate and reasonable manner but I do have a problem when people just dismiss someone with an off-hand insult without explaining why I wrong. To be honest with you, I do regret saying that the Beatles were terrible because when it comes down to it, there are a hell of a lot worse bands out there.

Anyways - point taken...

You could always resort to illegal activities and copy the CDs off someone who already has them...

Joining this music debate a bit late, I'm not going to express my opinion, but to avoid conflict like was just experienced, it would help if everyone could begin an insulting or opinionated statement by saying "I think... yadda yadda yadda"
